Frequently asked questions

What is a Pastoral Counselor?

A Pastoral Counselor is a person who believes in a three-part healing process that encompasses the physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness of the individual. Having received training in psychology and theology, they bring in the spiritual elements, which include prayer, scripture, and utilizing Biblical principles as a foundation. This is different from a licensed professional counselor, as the state has strict guidelines that delineate a separation of faith from the practice of counseling.

The NCCA requires all who are certified by its Board of Examiners to:

  • Be credentialed ministers (ordained or commissioned) whose goal is to evangelize and ease the emotional pain and suffering of humanity.
  • Provide their service under the authority of a legally organized local church, a national church organization or a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit ministry.
  • Complete specialized training provided by the NCCA.
  • Complete the minimum requirements for continuing education and annual license renewal.
  • Uphold NCCA’s Code of Ethical Standards
NCCA’s published "Code of Ethical Standards" outlines all of the procedures involved in dismissal, revocation, probation and reinstatement of an individual’s membership and/or certification and is available for review at www.ncca.org. Having NCCA credentials ensures that you are recognized within your community as a qualified Christian/Pastoral Counselor. The community can be assured that your credentials are authentic and current.

What is NCCA?

The National Christian Counselors Association (N.C.C.A.) is a non-profit, professional organization, dedicated to the advancement of faith-based approaches and principles in Christian counseling. Since the early 80's, they have been equipping ministers, Christian counselors, testing specialists, medical doctors, attorneys, and educators to advance the biblical teachings on human behavior, utilizing the faith-based counseling model, known as the Arno Profile System.

What is the Arno Profile System?

The Arno Profile System (APS Report), is a scripturally based therapeutic procedure that produces effective, positive, and immediate results for those needing guidance/counsel. The purpose of this report is to develop an accurate clinical testing procedure for initial identification of the counselee’s innate, God-given tendencies and temperament. • The report reveals the “hidden problems” that would normally take a counselor seven or eight sessions to identify. Today, over 7,000 Christian leaders, ministers, and professional Christian counselors rely on the Arno Profile System to aid them in their counseling efforts. The APS report has an accuracy rate of 97%.

What is Temperament?

Temperament is the inborn nature placed within us by God. This temperament will remain with us throughout our lives and determines how we interact and with our environment and how we perceive those around us. How we do (or do not) express this temperament can be affected by our upbringing, our environment, our education, and training.
Sometimes a person can adapt behavior that is very different from their inborn temperament, and that hides their true temperament. Unfortunately, this leads to unmet needs, more stress, and conflict when we try to meet needs apart from our relationship with God. Temperament Therapy helps us recognize our social and relational needs, find healthy ways to meet them, and helps us interact with our environment in the best way possible while honoring God.

What are the Benefits of Temperament Therapy?

Gain a deeper understanding of yourself • Obtain knowledge of your strengths and weaknesses • Learn about your unique temperament needs • Determine any unmet temperament needs you may have • Discover healthy ways to meet your needs • Discover root causes of stress and anxiety • Gain a greater understanding of your socialization needs
